Christmas with Grade 2

Since Tanghu is such a large school, I will be teaching the students about Christmas for four weeks. This week it was the turn of Grade 2 to learn about Christmas. Practice for the Cinderella play also continues, with the children now practicing on the main stage in the hall.

As Grade 2 don't have such a high understanding of English as Grade 4 we spent much longer covering the key words and principles of Christmas. Due to this we didn't have the time to cover two different Christmas songs. Instead I taught them Jingle Bells only, so we could focus more on them really understanding the basic words. Last time I taught Grade 2 they learned about shopping, specifically the verb "want".In Western cultures we often exchange presents at Christmas. As a form of recapping the previous lesson we covered "what do you want for Christmas?" using the names of toys they already know. The children really loved doing this activity! At the end of the lesson as a special treat if they were good, I played a song from "Frozen". I was really surprised and impressed to find so many children knew the words to such a complicated song! I hope to use more Disney songs in their classes in the future to encourage them to practice singing in English outside of the class.
