Building a farm with Grade 2

This week I taught Grade 3 and Grade 2. I was so happy with how the Grade 4s reacted to their lessons on building a farm, that I decided to recreate it with then younger years as well.

We started off recapping farm animals and different types of fruit. They all liked that fact I put my own pets into the PowerPoint, though trying to explain it was a little difficult! After this I gave the children some independent time to talk about what fruits they like and don't like. I feel this is really important to help them gain confidence in their oral english skills. We then built the farm in the same way as with Grade 4.I thought the different verbs may be a little difficult for the younger children, so we focused mainly on the basic vocabulary for farm animals and fruits. If children responded well I would introduce the more difficult verbs towards the end.

I like to have little rewards for if a class behaves well, so not only do children who volunteer to draw on the board and answer questions get stickers, but if the whole class works well and we finish the lesson early, then they can play “question and answer” with a miniature football. This involves one student throwing the ball to another and asking a question, the second student must then answer and throw the ball to someone else to ask them a question. This is a great way to involve all the children, and to check comprehension. I hope to modify the contents of this lesson to teach the children about many different topics, such as cities and towns.
