A new week at Tanghu, wherein a lion escapes from the zoo...
This week I finally got to teach Year 6! Year 6 was such a wonderful year to teach, their levels of English were amazing, and their enthusiasm for learning was really encouraging to see.
This week I did a learning activity with the Year 6's based on “zoo animals”. This involved teaching them various zoo animals, then surprising them with an entirely different lesson based on a lion escaping from a zoo. The children all loved this activity, and all eagerly discussed the various ways a lion could have escaped from the zoo. As well alion.jpgs this, other discussions involved; what you would say if you found a lion in your bed, a lions favourite food, who should the lions ask for help, and where should the lions escape to?
I was absolutely thrilled with the students response to this class! They all debated each question confidently, and gave some fantastic responses. Some of my favourite included; “I love the lion in my bed, it is very beautiful!”, “the lion should eat apples, it needs a diet”, and “the lions escaped the zoo...to go to the zoo!”. I think one of the most important parts of learning a language is confidence, and the fact that so many of my students were confident enough to stand up and speak (even if the answer was not perfect) meant a lot to me. I hope my lessons this week improved the students confidence in not only their own abilities to speak English independently, and without prompt, but also their confidence and excitement in class participation and imagination skills. Happy Autumn Holidays everyone!
